A Life Worth Living – Poem by Lisa Scuderi-Burkimsher

Melissa is happy reading a good book
rather than watching television.
Hours spent on the couch, feet up, sipping tea,
a favorite pastime.

She closes the book and looks out the window.
Birds are nesting and chirping a soothing tune.

The mother bird teaches her young to fly.
The bird flaps its wings unsteadily but makes it to the sky.

The sky is clear and vibrant blue.
A sight never to forget.

A brand-new year, in warm sunny Los Angeles.
Melissa reflects on the past year and wonders
what she could’ve done differently.

She returns to her book, intending to enjoy it.
There’s one thing she’d like to change but can’t.

Cancer.

Scuderi-Burkimsher is a writer of fiction and poetry.Her flash fiction story “The Big Duke,” was published in September of 2015.Mentored in techniques of writing, she published several micro flash shorts the same year, including “The Plunge,” and also has short stories in the Grey Wolfe Publishing anthologies. Her book “Shorts for the Short Story Enthusiasts,” was published in the fall of 2018. Lisa currently resides on Long Island, New York with her husband Rick and her little dogs Lucy Lu and Breanna Sue.
