Poem of the Black and White — by Edward O’Byrn

As I stare into this mirror
He stares back at me
His ghostly reflection
Is all that I see

He begins with a word
A misspoken river
As his tone becomes bright
I hear the word delivered

The blow is astonishing
Coming from my own
This mirror image self
Is strongest yet shown

Peering deeply in my eyes
He yells in a language untold
Then gaining strength
I hear what is told

“Have you been to Niger lately?
Have you ever seen your home?
Your family was captured!
The men stripped your throne!

I hear what he said
But I can’t bear the sound
My people are dying
Without me around
