 Sidney  Klein: Born-again as a Holocaust Artist on October 7, 2023 (when Hamas invaded Israel) after a 55-year no-painting hiatus. He paints the effects of antisemitism-the death and destruction and hopes to lessen antisemitism as viewers see, feel, and are affected. His work is in the Heller Museum in NYC, the Gross-Rosen Muzeum in Rogoznica, Poland, and Yad Vashem Holocaust Art Research Center in Jerusalem, Israel. You can CLICK to see his work:  STUDIO

After 2 Israeli Embassy staff members were shot and killed in Washington, DC, I got emails asking if I was OK. Friends sent prayers for my safety even though the shooting happened almost 600 miles away. The murder of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim goes beyond geographical boundaries. A Chicago man shot them “for Gaza” outside the Capital Jewish Museum. I won’t give his name because that visibility motivates copycat crimes as noted in my co-authored book, When Hate Grows March Down Main Street.

Antisemitic Rhetoric on Chattanooga Campus – by Rabbi Craig Lewis

Of all the times to learn that about antisemitic literature circulating in my city, the news reached me during the intermission of “Fiddler on the Roof.” It is a great show that captures a moment in time, combining the folklore of Sholom Aleichem, the imagery of Marc Chagall, and great music by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick to tell a story from the collective Jewish memory. As with true Jewish history, it includes the good and the bad parts of being Jewish. We love “Tradition,” but much of our tradition has been built under the weight of oppression. “Fiddler” does not ignore this as the Russian constable’s promise of a pogrom, a violent attack against Jewish communities, mostly in the Russian Empire. Like Chekov’s gun, the mention of a pogrom comes to fruition and disrupts the joyous wedding scene. Being that this is still musical comedy, the pogrom is sanitized: a few goose pillows are torn up, a table flipped over, and one wedding guest is beaten. There is just enough to suggest what really would have happened.

An informed viewer of the show knows it more likely looked like the description from Chayim Nachman Bialik’s poem, “The City of Slaughter,” written about the 1903 pogrom in Kishinev. Here are a few excerpts:

Explaining antisemitism – by Deborah Levine

Antisemitism goes back long before the term was  coined by a German historian in 1781. Violent attacks and expulsions of Jewish communities span centuries. The Babylonians exiled Jews from Zion, the earliest use of the term, into Middle Eastern and Mediterranean regions. The Romans forced Jews into Europe. Blamed for causing the Black Plague, Jews were driven out of England, France, Germany, and Italy. They fled to Eastern Europe but experienced violent pogroms and isolation into The Pale. Throughout it all, the elements of antisemitism rarely changed.   

For example, the Blood Libel dates as far back as the Temple in Jerusalem with claims that Jews sacrificed Greeks. It reappeared in the Middle Ages when an English cult announced that Passover Seder wine was actually Christian blood. Centuries later, a mob destroyed a synagogue in Damascus for this blood libel. As recently as 1928 in New York, Jews were accused of kidnapping and ritually killing a young girl.
