Pope Leo XIV is a Change Agent – by Mauricio Velásquez

A courageous voice in a wilderness of quiet conflict avoidance is refreshing, Pope Leo XIV’s regular critical comments of Trump’s policies are honorable and most important, necessary in today’s theater of hate and division.  Pope Leo XIV has been a “moral check” on our present administration, challenging them as not being even humanitarian.  He speaks  for so many – representing Catholics from all over the world.  

Most important to note is how Pope Leo XIV critizes policy, the administration’s actions and not Trump personally.  Donald J. Trump spews hate and suspicion every day and is a serial liar and it is Pope Leo XIV who cannot look the other way and “calls out Trump” constantly, regularly.  Pope Leo XIV has criticized Trump’s policies on immigrants (“inhuman”), Iran War (“atrocious”) and calls out Trump’s action as not Christian.  It is the right approach – separate the person from their actions and focus on their actions and consequences of their actions.

In stark and quite frankly reprehensible contrast, Trump most recently personally attacked Pope Leo XIV (of all people) as an “insult to Jesus.”   Now, you don’t see or hear about this in the media or at least I have not seen or heard mention of this most recent personal attack – the silence is deafening – but I felt I had to weigh in. 

Trump’s tactics are to bully his foes.  But what he does not seem to understand is he loses power, influence, and credbiility every time he bullies someone and an unintended consequence of his bullying is he puts a spotlight on the object of his taunts and personally attacks.  We must call it out.

We cannot be a part of the problem and say nothing, we must “lean in” and be heard and support anyone who stands up to Trump.  We must support Pope Leo XIV so he does not appear as a “lone voice” but rather represents the conscience of many.  Pope Leo XIV is a necessary voice and I salute him, support him and appreciate him.  

I loved Pope Leo XIV’s response to Trump’s personal attack.

Pope Leo XIV said in response…..

   “Yoυ waпt to kпow what iпsυlts Jesυs?”
   “Kickiпg the sick off their health care while cυttiпg taxes for billioпaires;”
   “Deportiпg the straпger aпd separatiпg babies from their mothers;”
   “Bombiпg iппoceпt childreп, seпdiпg yoυпg meп aпd womeп to die iп eпdless wars, aпd protectiпg the powerfυl while the weak sυffer iп sileпce;”
   “Jesυs told υs to love oυr пeighbors as oυrselves. Caп we imagiпe war iп heaveп? Caп we imagiпe hatred iп heaveп? Caп we imagiпe poverty iп heaveп? Theп why do we tolerate these thiпgs oп earth?”

Step back, take it all in.  Trump tried to pick a moral, personal fight with the Pope?

You can’t make this up.  Trump lost this fight fabulously, spectacularly!

Every day we are reminded of how immoral, illegal, and reprehensible are the actions and policies of this administration.
