ADR Advisor Cortés is a retired history professor who has been a diversity speaker, educator, trainer, and consultant for 45 years. His books include: The Children Are Watching: How the Media Teach about Diversity (2000); his memoir, Rose Hill: An Intermarriage before Its Time (2012); and a book of poetry, Fourth Quarter: Reflections of a Cranky Old Man (2016), which received honorable mention for best book of poetry (2017 International Latino Book Awards). Ellen Estilai has spent much of her career collaborating with artists, writers, and agencies to strengthen communities through the arts. She has served as the executive director of the Riverside (California) Arts Council and the Arts Council for San Bernardino County. In addition to teaching language, literature, and writing at universities in Iran and California, she has published essays, short stories, and poetry, the memoir Exit Prohibited (Inlandia Institute, 2023), and the chapbook, The Museum of Missing Things (Jamii Publishing, 2023).

Carlos:  Ellen, we’ve taken creative writing classes together for a number of years, so it’s nice to discuss your fascinating new book, Exit Prohibited (Inlandia Institute, 2023), about your family’s escape from revolutionary Iran.
