Deb Hunter Podcast – History of the Cherokee Nation

Deb Hunter was a USA Today best selling author, historian & podcaster.  A former executive director of the World Chamber of Commerce, she was active in Atlanta’s British-American Business Council.

Her journey with the Cherokee Nation began in 2021 when she contacted them for permission to explore their history for a Civil War discussion. That lead to numerous conversations.

The revelation by Secretary Deb Haaland of the Indian Boarding School Initiative is synergistic as the report includes a Cherokee School in Chattanooga TN – the Brainerd Mission – (Deb was originally from Chattanooga).
Note: She worked with a historian from the Cherokee Nation to verify this information.

Jed Mescon Podcast – Jewish in The South

Jed Mescon Jed Mescon is  a relationship builder, brand ambassador, dynamic speaker, creative thinker, persuasive communicator, veteran fundraiser, and community advocate. He is well known in Chattanooga having served as the host of the radio talk show Chewin the Chatt and as the morning news anchor for WRCB-TV.

Jed is a leader in the Jewish community of Chattanooga and serves on many nonprofit boards. He is passionate about connecting with people to find stories that need telling; creating ideas with the potential to spark change, and energizing the narrative to activate support for the greater good.

Shelley Rose: Council Against Hate

ADLChattanooga Council Against Hate

Shelley Rose is Deputy Director with the Southeast Region Anti-Defamation League (ADL),  which tracks trends in hate. In this position, she organizes community programming, provides educational outreach to community organizations, coordinates legislative advocacy and conducts workshops and presentations for parents and educators on religious intolerance, anti-bias training and cultural awareness. Shelley’s articles have been published in newspapers, magazines and journals and she has appeared on television and radio as a spokesperson for ADL.

Shelley also spoke at the inaugural meeting of Chattanooga’s Council Against Hate,  an initiative spearheaded by Mayor Andy Berke. In an interview with Deborah Levine, Mayor Berke explained the background for doing this project:

La Paz Chattanooga: Serving the Latinx Community

Lily Sanchez, a first-generation Dominican-American, is the Communications Coordinator for La Paz Chattanooga and serves its Latinx community. She graduated with  a degree in Communication and English Writing from the U. of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she founded the Spanish Language version of the campus newspaper.

Rev. Janet Cooper Nelson: Religious Diversity on Campus

The Reverend Janet M. Cooper Nelson is Chaplain, Director of the Office of Chaplains and Religious Life, and faculty member at Brown University where she leads a multi-faith team of 4 Associate Chaplains and 40 Religious Life Affiliates, responsibilities she assumed in 1990 after appointments at Vassar, Mount Holyoke, and The Church of Christ at Dartmouth College.

She is ordained in United Church of Christ and holds degrees from Wellesley College, Tufts University, and Harvard Divinity School where she was awarded the Billings Prize for Preaching, the Rabbi Martin Katzenstein Distinguished Alumni award, and The Peter J. Gomes Memorial Award.
