I recently retired from a career as a Special Education teacher for five years after teaching at-risk middle school students in a public alternative school. I earned a BS Degree and a Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and an Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and completed additional graduate work at Mississippi State University. Three of my children are Special Education teachers and one is a disc jockey in an Atlanta club. I lost the love of my life, Fern, to pancreatic cancer in 2011.

The discussion of diversity in the South brought to mind a few experiences I have personally had. It goes without saying that people from different geographical areas in the United States, and the world for that matter, are different in many ways. Speaking in the distinctive Southern dialect, I am often set apart from my peers, students, friends, and professional in the United States and internationally.
