You are always twenty-six.
I feel your heart in the beat of wind-
shield wipers and rain on the roof.
Sirens howl into the downpour.
Traffic stops. I’m waiting
on the unknown, the unseen.
The music tapers and I’m left
on the dance floor, but the spotlight’s
on you and I can’t find my way out.
Caution lights sputter the gray
with gold. I’m ready to see you,
shifting into drive as cars crawl ahead.
