I hail from the family of Priests and Pastors in India. My tryst with “Om” and its significance in my life is immense. From early childhood, I was taught how to chant it with correct diction and feel so that it would bring my mind, soul, and body in unison with the vibrations of the chant.
I used to be an over active child and would never sit in one place to study or do anything with concentration and single-minded focus. The chanting of Om made my mind calm, it helped me focus on my studies and made me aware of my surroundings.
I would have never been admitted to 8th Grade in a new school that boasted of excellence in sports and studies, since only the best of the best students were admitted. Here again, the powerful mantra came to my rescue. I chanted it every day and made the best use of my concentration, cognitive and intellectual capabilities. I helped me to aim, aspire and strive and made me a better human being. It taught me how to value people and to respect them as the creation of the Almighty, and to help them grow as members of society. My cheerful disposition, smiling face and an utmost urge to help anyone is all due to the awareness that was created by chanting the mantra often. It helped me come to terms with my inner self and achieve inner peace and tranquility.
Origin of Om
The Word “Om” traces its origin in the Vedas, Upanishads, and the sacred Texts of the Hindus. It is a cosmic sound and as symbol of divinity. Om is the first word of knowledge and intellect that God taught its first creations. Its origin is in Sanskrit, the Mother of all Indian Languages. Sanskrit has been considered as most compatible language for Computers bits and bytes.
The chanting of Om energizes our inner being and connects us to the Universe. It is the pulse, vibration or reverberation that connects us with the Cosmos or the World. It can give us a sense of inner peace or calm, making us feel empowered and relaxed. It is a synergy of the Creator with its creation.
Significance of Om
As it is evident that the word Om connects us to the Cosmos or the Universe, it is indeed a very powerful and forceful word. Its correct utterance and constant chanting can have a soothing and a calming effect on our nervous system. With all the chaos, disturbances and turmoil around us, the constant reciting of Om can bring huge mental relief. It can dissipate and dispel the stress and tension that we today.
Technique of Chanting
The best way to benefit from the reciting of Om is to sit in a quiet place with a straight posture. In the initial phase, one must focus on one’s breath and continue to breathe in and breathe out slowly for one minute. As soon as you realize that you have a grip on your breathing, then transcend to chanting the word Om for a few seconds, slowly increasing that time to 30 seconds for at least 10 times to see some calming effects.
The practice of such chanting cleanses and purifies our environment. It helps promote better concentration at work or in studies. It helps our nervous system to relax and cleans our nasal functions. Last, but not least, it helps us be one with our Creator.
COVID-19: How we can give valuable input for the humanity
I have made it my daily routine to chant it early in the morning and at night before going to bed. I pray for everyone each day, so that we all can overcome all the issues we are facing today. In these tough times of the COVID 19 outbreak, the mantra can help people transcend their loneliness, desolation, and solitude. The innumerable healthcare personnel, the law enforcement and so also the common man can benefit a lot from it. It will help relieve the stress and tension of everyday life and instill a sense of calm and peace.
Chanting of Om has cured many people in India, United States, Australia and many other countries. True meditation starts with the word “Om” or any one with Yogic or Yoga practice personnel starts with Om.
Most of the Asian India specifically Hindu scriptures starts with Om. The chant ends with Om Shanti Om which means, Be Peaceful.
